A Tamil music show led by women performers will take centre stage ton Feb 16, spotlighting female talents in an industry where line-ups have long been male-dominated.

“She Got Beats” – a women-led show – aims to celebrate female talent and amplify the voices of those who are carving their own space in the industry. It is a first-of-its-kind Tamil music event in Singapore, featuring an all-women lineup of DJs, rappers, and live percussionists.

This inaugural edition at Hard Rock Singapore is set to lay the foundation for a recurring cultural platform that sheds light on women beyond melody.

She Got Beats is designed to create representation that matters, allowing the next generation to see women leading rhythm, sound, and performance as a natural part of Tamil culture, noted the organiser, 272 Entertainment, a women-led organisation.

Among the accomplished female artistes lined up for the event are DJ Deepika and rapper Yunohoo, who spoke to tabla!.

Formerly known as Rubba Bend, rapper Yunohoo, 36, is a Kuala Lumpur-based independent artiste known for her independent releases as well as her contributions to Tamil cinema songs, bringing sharp lyricism and a strong cultural voice.

She rose to prominence when the Malaysian song ‘Hey Pulla Maria’ became a major hit due to her rap in the early 2010s, after which she received Tamil cinema opportunities, giving her the chance to sing for music composer Yuvan Shankar Raja.

She has sung for Tamil movies, all composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja. Notable ones include ‘Run For Your Life’ from the film Biriyani, ‘Kaalam’ from Nerkonda Paarvai, and ‘Stylish Tamilachi’ from Aarambam.

For someone who grew up in a female-dominated environment and studied in girls’ schools, Yunohoo, whose real name is Shamnkeri Pillai, least expected her rap career to start in an environment where she was the only female. Another hurdle she had to overcome was that, as a mother to an eight-year-old boy, she also had to stay off the radar for three years due to her mothering duties.

“Women are naturally talented. We have long been suppressed from expressing our talents due to criticisms and stereotypes. I think it’s time women step up and come out of their shells,” said Yunohoo.

An award-winning disc jockey (DJ) from Chennai, widely recognised as one of the city’s leading female DJs, known for her genre-blending sets and commanding stage presence, Deepika who only goes by one name, has faced stereotypes about women in the Tamil music industry.

She Got Beats will be the first experience for the 32-year-old taking part in an all-women show.

“My mother tongue is Marathi. People have asked me why I am in the Tamil music scene when I am not even Tamil. I grew up in Chennai and have always identified myself as a Tamil,” said Deepika.

“Many people have also started to appreciate women in this scene. I could see a lot of women taking up careers in this sector, and our presence has been increasing.”

Deepika hopes the young female audience will understand that surviving a male-dominated industry is not easy and that women are strong enough to break barriers.

“She Got Beats will definitely be a feast for the 80s and 90s kids. I will be playing many classic hits,” she added.
