Messaging platform WhatsApp has announced a new feature called parent-managed accounts, designed to give parents more control over how their children use the app. The new accounts allow younger users – especially those under 13 – to use Whatsapp with restrictions and supervision from a parent or guardian.

Under the new system, a child’s account is linked to a parent’s Whatsapp account, allowing parents to manage settings and monitor activity. Parents can decide who is allowed to message their child, which groups they can join, and how privacy setting are configured.

To set up a managed account, the parent must link their device with their child’s phone, usually by scanning a QR code and verifying the child’s phone number. The account’s controls are protected with a parent PIN, which means only the parents can change the privacy settings or approve requests.

The feature also limits some parts of the app for younger users. Parent-managed accounts mainly allow for messaging and calls, while features such as channels, status updates, or AI tools may be restricted. Parents can also review message requests from unknown contacts and approve new connections.

Despite the additional controls, Whatsapp said messages will remain private and protected by end-to-end encryption, meaning even the company cannot read the conversations.

The rollout comes amid growing global concern about children’s safety online and increasing pressure on tech companies to introduce stronger protections for younger users. WhatsApp said the feature was developed after feedback from families who wanted a safer way for pre-teens to communicate with friends and relatives.

The parent-managed accounts feature is being rolled out gradually worldwide, and the company plans to gather feedback from families as it expands the tool in the coming months.
