The Singapore Kadayanallur Muslim League (SKML) began the celebration of its 85th anniversary on July 26 through the SKML 85th Anniversary Heritage Walk. Participants covered approximately 6.5 kilometres or 8,500 steps through heritage sites in areas like Bukit Merah, Telok Blangah Crescent, and Tanjong Pagar before arriving at Kadayanallur Street.
Guest of Honour Rahayu Mahzam, Minister of State for Health, and Communications and Information, unveiled a mock-up of the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) Heritage Marker, which tells the story of the Umar Pulavar Tamil High School – located at the current URA site at Kadayanallur Street – and the significant contribution of SKML in establishing the Tamil-medium school during the 1950s.
SKML, which was founded in 1941, wanted the event to not only promote a healthy lifestyle and appreciation for culture, but also to celebrate its major contributions to Indian Muslims in Singapore. The celebrations will continue till the commemoration in an 85th Anniversary Gala Dinner on Sept 12.
