Job matching can’t be left entirely to market forces in S’pore: PM Wong
Even as Singapore forges on with economic transformation, the creation of good jobs and effective job matching cannot be left entirely to market forces.
Both national policies and community-level initiatives are needed to support the training and job needs of Singaporeans, said Prime Minister Lawrence Wong at the full launch of the Jobs Nearby @ CDC initiative on Oct 23. Led by the five Community Development Councils (CDCs), the initiative aims to better connect job seekers with opportunities in their neighbourhoods.
Police probe ongoing after online clip shows Porsche moving with 2 kids sitting atop rear
The police are investigating a case involving two children who appeared to be riding atop the rear of a sports car, after a video of the act surfaced on social media.
It appears that the children sitting there were part of a TikTok video that was posted on Deepavali (Oct 20) by the user handle @premroymotoring, belonging to car consignment firm Prem Roy Motoring. However, a check on the same TikTok account on Oct 22 showed that the video has since been deleted. It is unclear when it was taken down.
Dengue cases reported in S’pore from July to Sept, dropped 35% from previous quarter
There were 874 dengue cases here between July and September, a 35.8 per cent decrease from the 1,361 cases reported in the previous quarter. There was one death in the latest quarter, compared with two in the previous three months, according to the National Environment Agency’s (NEA) quarterly dengue surveillance data released on Oct 21.
Overall, there were fewer dengue cases in 2025 up till Oct 11, compared with the same period in 2024, according to the latest Ministry of Health weekly infectious disease bulletin.
Python found under seat of SMRT bus in Woodlands after two rescue attempts
Ten passengers were transferred onto another bus to continue their journey after a python was spotted on board a bus in Woodlands on Oct 21. However, it took two attempts by the Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (Acres) to finally capture the elusive animal.
The bus captain of service 901M was driving along Woodlands Avenue 1 on Oct 21 when he noticed that there was a snake on board at 9.05pm. Acres sent a rescue team after receiving a call for assistance but its officers could not find the snake despite conducting a thorough search of the vehicle.
Man, 82, crashed girlfriend’s car, jailed for driving with licence that expired in 1995
An elderly man without a valid driving licence drove his girlfriend’s car without her permission and crashed the vehicle after stepping on the wrong pedal. On Oct 22, Loh Chun Meng, 82, was sentenced to two weeks’ jail, fined $2,000, and banned from driving for two years.
He pleaded guilty to three charges – driving without a valid licence, driving without insurance and driving without due care and attention. For driving a car without a licence, Loh could have been jailed for up to three years, fined up to $10,000, or both.
Gold, silver extend rout after massive sell-off as rally loses shine
Gold and silver extended declines on Oct 22, following their steepest sell-off in years the previous day, as investors locked in profits on concern that the recent surges in precious metals had left them overvalued.
Spot gold fell as much as 3 per cent to trade near US$4,000 an ounce, before paring losses. That came after it tumbled as much as 6.3 per cent on Oct 21 in the biggest intraday decline in more than a dozen years. Spot silver dropped again after posting an intraday loss of 8.7 per cent on Oct 21.
