Spize outlets in Bedok fined $3,600 each for food safety lapses

Two companies that operate under the Spize chain of eateries were fined $3,600 each on Wednesday for food safety lapses, the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) said.

In July 2022, SFA received reports of gastroenteritis involving 15 people who consumed food prepared by Spize’s food establishments at Bedok Road. None of them were hospitalised.

SFA found multiple food lapses at the stall, including improper segregation of raw and cooked food at the serving station, and the use of a stained chopping board.

Man who rented rooms to illegal overstayers sentenced to 6 months’ jail

A man who rented a room to a foreigner who had overstayed was sentenced to six months’ jail on Tuesday, said the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA).

Lim Sin Kian, 53, had rented a room out to Zhao Shunnu, now 58, in his Bedok Reservoir HDB flat for $550 a month, in January 2021, according to ICA.

Despite knowing that his tenants were foreigners, Lim did not check their identification documents and verify whether their stays in Singapore were valid, ICA said.

All adult Singaporeans to receive Assurance Package cash payments in December

All Singaporeans aged 21 and above in 2024 will receive between $200 and $800 in December through the Government’s Assurance Package to help with the rising cost of living.

Within this group of about 2.9 million Singaporeans, about 2.5 million will receive an additional payment of up to $200, said the Ministry of Finance on Wednesday.

This additional sum applies to Singaporeans whose assessable income for year of assessment 2022 is up to $100,000.

Man fined $30,000 for under-declaring cash brought into Singapore

A Malaysian man was on Tuesday fined $30,000 for under-declaring the amount of cash he brought into Singapore on two occasions.

Bryan Woo Kah Hou, 26, worked as a cash courier for Million Serenity, a money changer based in Sarawak, Malaysia.

He carried almost $2 million into Singapore on June 20, 2023, but declared that he was carrying only about $700,000. On June 16, 2023, he carried in at least $1 million in cash but declared only $460,000.

$680k seized, 5 held in anti-scam operation after DBS team’s tip-offs

Five people suspected of being money mules were arrested in an island-wide anti-scam operation by the police in November, during which $680,000 was seized.

Another 47 people, including at least one teenager and individuals aged over 60, are under investigation by the police.

The suspects, who allegedly acted as money mules by passing their bank accounts to scammers or allowing them to open bank accounts using their Singpass IDs, were nabbed with tip-offs from DBS Bank’s Anti-Mule Team.

The bank accounts were allegedly used to receive and transfer proceeds from scams.

Singaporean missionary dies in traffic accident in Turkey

A 56-year-old Singaporean man died in a traffic accident in Turkey on Wednesday.

Turkish media reports said that Mr Joseph Chean was in a taxi travelling towards Edirne – a city in the country’s north-west – on the Northern Marmara Highway when it crashed into the back of a car.

Christian training organisation Youth With A Mission (YWAM) Singapore, where the late Mr Chean was national director for 12 years, also confirmed his death in a Facebook post on Thursday.
