Dengue cases down in first two weeks of October

The number of dengue cases in Singapore dropped in the first two weeks of October, after exceeding 300 in September.

Data on the National Environment Agency (NEA) website shows that there were 266 reported cases between Oct 1 and 7, and 215 between Oct 8 and last Saturday.

Between Sunday and Wednesday, there were 98 reported cases.

This brings the total number of reported cases in the year to 7,884.

Appeal denied for former chief priest who pawned temple jewellery

The former chief priest at Sri Mariamman Temple, who received more than $2.3 million from pawning gold jewellery that was used to adorn statues of deities at the South Bridge Road temple, failed in his appeal for a lighter jail term.

Kandasamy Senapathi, 39, was sentenced to six years’ jail by a district judge in May.

On Tuesday, his lawyer Divanan Narkunan argued before the High Court that the sentence imposed was manifestly excessive. But Justice Vincent Hoong disagreed.

Election expenses of PE2023 candidates open for inspection online

The election expenses of the presidential election candidates will be open for inspection online from 9am today.

This is the first time the returns on election expenses as well as the declarations submitted by candidates is made available for inspection online after the polls.

The returns will be available for inspection for six months, till April 19, 2024.

Drink-driving businesswoman allegedly failed to stop at two red lights

The 72-year-old owner of an electronics firm had allegedly consumed alcohol shortly before she drove a car and failed to stop at two red lights in the Teban Gardens area in Jurong East.

On Thursday, Wong Sin Thye, who owns Sin Li Electronics Trading, was charged with one count each of drink driving and driving without due care and attention.

She was allegedly driving along Teban Gardens Road towards West Coast Road shortly before midnight on Aug 3 when she failed to stop at two red light signals near Hasanah Mosque.

Sports cars made to U-turn for cutting queue at Tuas Checkpoint

Four Porsche sports cars entering Singapore at the Tuas Checkpoint were made to turn around on Oct 15 afternoon after they cut the traffic queue.

In a video posted on the SG Road Vigilante Facebook page, four Singapore-registered cars are seen cutting right into the car lane from the leftmost lane.

The video later shows the four cars travelling away from the Tuas Checkpoint, towards Malaysia.

An Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) spokesman told The Straits Times: “ICA confirms that the four Porsche cars were made to U-turn due to them cutting the queue.”

Tanglin Halt to have 5,500 HDB flats, hawker centre and polyclinic

Up to 5,500 Housing Board flats will be built as part of redevelopment plans for Tanglin Halt, one of Singapore’s oldest housing estates, in Queenstown.

An integrated development – where HDB flats are connected to facilities such as shops, hawker centres and markets – will be a key feature of the estate, the Housing Board said on Thursday. The Queenstown Polyclinic at Stirling Road will be relocated to the complex.

The development will be built on the site of the former Tanglin Halt Neighbourhood Centre, which houses the existing Tanglin Halt Market and the former Commonwealth Drive Food Centre.
