Ex-speaker Tan Chuan-Jin apologises for hot mic comments

Leader of the House Indranee Rajah on Wednesday read out Mr Tan’s apology on his behalf, after he resigned from the People’s Action Party on July 17 following an extramarital affair with fellow former MP Cheng Li Hui.

In a video released in July, Mr Tan is heard muttering “****ing populist” on the microphone at an April 17 sitting, after a speech by Workers’ Party MP Jamus Lim (Sengkang GRC).

Woman who fell from cruise ship into S’pore Strait has died, says son

Search efforts for the missing 64-year-old woman who fell from a cruise ship into the Singapore Strait on Monday morning are ongoing, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore said on Tuesday, even as one of her sons said in an Instagram post that he had accepted she had died.

In his post on Tuesday, Mr Vivek Sahani said the family had seen closed-circuit television footage from the Spectrum of the Seas, the vessel his parents were on. The co-founder of restaurant chainGoila Butter Chicken said: “With the footage, we have unfortunately learnt that my mother has passed away.”

Competition watchdog looking into Grab’s proposed takeover of Trans-Cab

Singapore’s competition watchdog is looking into Grab’s proposed takeover of Trans-Cab, Minister of State for Trade and Industry Alvin Tan told Parliament on Thursday.

Responding to a question from Nominated MP Leong Mun Wai, Mr Tan said the Competition and Consumer Commission of Singapore (CCCS) had received Grab’s notification of the proposed acquisition. “CCCS will assess the impact of the proposed acquisition on competition and consult relevant stakeholders before reaching a decision on the matter. A public consultation will be done.”

Asia Sentinel correction note required on website to correct falsehood

Online publication Asia Sentinel was ordered to display a correction note on an article containing false statements and on its main webpage to ensure that the notice reached as many readers as the original falsehood, Senior Minister of State for Communications and Information Janil Puthucheary said in Parliament on Thursday.

The site was blocked from access here after Asia Sentinel did not display the authorities’ correction notices at the top of its article and main page.

Private rainwater harvesters, desalination plants to be taxed from 2025

Private companies that harvest rainwater and those that treat seawater on a large scale will be taxed by national water agency PUB from early-2025.

This will apply to suppliers who provide non-potable water for their own use or for sale, with the new tax largely affecting country clubs, golf courses and industrial premises, Senior Minister of State for Sustainability and the Environment Koh Poh Koon said in Parliament on Thursday.

This comes as water demand is expected to almost double by 2065.

Man charged after he allegedly abused restaurant director

A man was hauled to court on Thursday after he allegedly unleashed a torrent of vulgarities at a director and shareholder of Shashlik Restaurant at Far East Shopping Centre in June.

Greg Austin Lynn, a 54-year-old American, is also said to have told Mr Tan Tong Kein that he would close the establishment down, adding: “I will (deal with) every family member you got from here to China… because I own China too.”

Lynn was handed four charges on Thursday, including two counts of harassment.
