Businesses, households can help offset impact of higher electricity prices: Tan See Leng
Although measures are in place to ensure that Singapore has enough energy to meet its needs, the conflict in the Middle East has driven up global gas prices, Minister-in-charge of Energy and Science & Technology Tan See Leng said in a Facebook post on March 12.
“We must therefore expect electricity prices to increase in the coming months,” said the minister, adding that households and businesses have a part to play in offsetting some of this impact by conserving electricity and adopting more energy-efficient appliances.
Singapore will maintain tough stance against drug abuse despite criticism: Shanmugam
Singapore will continue to take a very tough line against drug abuse, despite global tolerance, said Minister K. Shanmugam at the Community Resilience Against Drug Abuse Roundtable 2026.
He defended the death penalty for drug trafficking, citing a 2024 study showing it deters trafficking, with 87% public support. Also, support among youth respondents had increased since the last survey in 2023. More than 87 per cent of youth respondents said in 2025 that they see the harms and consequences of drug abuse, compared with about 83 per cent in 2023.
3 ex-coaches charged over alleged falsified results
On March 12, Muhammad Faiz Suhaimi, 33, and Ho Ho Huat, 56, were each charged with three counts of engaging in a conspiracy to commit forgery for the purpose of cheating. Gary Lee Quan Hua, 35, was handed two charges for similar offences.

In response to a media query, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it received a call for assistance at 120 Bukit Merah Lane 1, the address of the hawker centre, at about 9pm that day.
Firefighters, rescue specialists from the Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team, and an SCDF paramedic worked together to rescue the man. The paramedic administered pain relief and monitored the man’s vital signs throughout the rescue operation.

Man charged with murdering elderly man in Geylang red-light district fight
Ong Hou Cheong, 48, is accused of causing the death of Chow Ling Fei, 70, who died in hospital on March 9. Officers found the elderly man injured at the scene. The 48-year-old was arrested there and taken conscious to another hospital.
Preliminary investigations revealed both men knew each other. The offence of murder carries the death penalty. Police investigations are ongoing.
Radio DJ Sonia Chew auditioned for Bridgerton lead role
Singaporean host and radio DJ Sonia Chew has revealed that she auditioned for the role of female lead Sophie Baek in the latest season of hit Netflix period series Bridgerton (2020 to present). Chew, 34, said on social media on March 9 that she was invited by her artiste manager to audition for an acting role while she was on holiday in New York in 2024.
The part eventually went to Korean-Australian actress Yerin Ha, 28, who became the show’s first East Asian lead. Part 1 of Season 4 launched on Jan 29 and Part 2 on Feb 26.
