New Bill on critical entities will enhance economic resilience and security

As a small and open economy, Singapore’s survival will depend on its ability to adapt its strategies to tackle global changes and manage the link between economic and security interests better than its competitors, Trade and Industry Minister Gan Kim Yong said on Thursday.

He said a new Bill on regulating major investments in critical entities introduced on Monday is part of the strategy to improve the nation’s economic resilience and security.

“The Bill will strengthen our position as a trusted hub for businesses to invest with confidence in a stable, safe and secure Singapore,” he added.

SIA CEO says ticket prices remain high industrywide

It is not just Singapore Airlines but the aviation industry as a whole that has priced airfares high, as air travel continues to recover from the Covid-19 pandemic, said the national carrier’s chief executive Goh Choon Phong on Wednesday.

Asked whether prices for flight tickets have peaked, Mr Goh pointed to softening passenger yields – a proxy for airfares – as rival airlines have added more capacity.

He said SIA does not set its prices in isolation. Instead, it looks at what competitors offering similar products are doing and ensures that the price disparity is not too big.

The 29-year-old Chinese national also broke manpower laws for lying in her work permit application.

COE prices fall across the board following increased supply

Certificate of entitlement (COE) prices fell across all five categories at the latest tender exercise that closed on Wednesday.

The biggest drops were in the premiums for Category B, for larger, more powerful cars and electric vehicles (EVs), which tumbled by $40,000, and the Open category, which fell by nearly $33,000.

These drops came after six consecutive tender exercises that saw record-breaking premiums for both categories.
