In one of the most closely watched and competitive elections in the history of the Singapore Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SICCI), businessman Rajakumar Chandra has emerged as the chamber’s new chairman after leading Team Raj to a commanding victory in the June 19 polls.
The election, which saw members choosing between two competing leadership slates, marked a significant departure from SICCI’s traditional consensus-based leadership transitions and reflected growing member engagement in shaping the future of one of Singapore’s most influential ethnic business chambers.
Team Raj secured an overwhelming mandate, officially winning more than 70 per cent of votes cast, capturing all four key office-bearer positions and 10 of the 13 board seats available.
Besides Mr Rajakumar’s election as chairman for the 2026-2028 term, Mr Parthibhan Murugaiyan and Mr Jagdish Prasad Jaiswal were elected vice-chairmen, while Mr S. Venkita Padmanabhan won the honorary treasurer position.
The successful board candidates from Team Raj were Mr Dinesh Verma, Mr Jeyakumar Janakaraj, Mrs Joyce Kingsly, Mrs Purnima Kamath, Mr Haree Anand Babu, Mr Sunil Rai, Mr S. Mahenthiran, Mr Sanjey Chandran Chandroo, Mr Shameen Ali and Ms Uma Maheswari Mutayan.
The rival Forward Leadership Alliance (FLA), led by businessman Dato’ T. Mogan, secured the remaining three board positions through Mr Rajith Mohan, Mr Ramesh Kumar Ramasamy and Ms Veena Subramaniam.
The contest will likely be remembered as one of the most significant in SICCI’s more than 100-year history. Traditionally, leadership changes within the chamber have often been resolved through consensus-building and internal agreement. This year’s election, however, featured two full competing slates presenting distinct visions for SICCI’s future, reflecting both the growing diversity of Singapore’s Indian business community and heightened interest in the chamber’s strategic direction.
The election also unfolded against a backdrop of economic uncertainty, rising business costs, workforce challenges, artificial intelligence-driven disruption and evolving Singapore-India economic relations.
Members were effectively choosing not just individuals, but competing approaches to how SICCI should support businesses ranging from traditional family enterprises and SMEs to multinational corporations, technology firms and startups.
The strong mandate delivered to Team Raj suggests members opted for continuity, experience and a leadership team already deeply familiar with the chamber’s operations.
Speaking after his victory, Mr Rajakumar struck a conciliatory and forward-looking tone.
“This mandate is both humbling and inspiring. I thank every member who participated in the election process. Together with the newly elected Board, I look forward to listening, learning and serving our members while continuing the great work of those who built SICCI over the last century,” he said.
Mr Padmanabhan echoed those sentiments, describing the result as a responsibility rather than a triumph.
“The strong support from members is both humbling and inspiring. We accept this mandate not as a victory to celebrate, but as a responsibility to deliver,” said Mr Mr Padmanabhan.
In a subsequent LinkedIn post, he noted that Team Raj inherited not merely an institution but a legacy built over generations through “sacrifice, service, prudent stewardship and bold decisions”.
He added that the election was over and that the real work now begins.
The incoming leadership has already outlined a broad agenda focused on strengthening member value and helping businesses navigate an increasingly complex operating environment.
Among Team Raj’s priorities are enhanced support for SMEs and micro-businesses, stronger member engagement, greater youth participation and maintaining SICCI’s position as a leading voice for the Indian business community in Singapore.
Mr Rajakumar had earlier proposed several practical initiatives, including expanding SME advisory services, reopening the SME Centre satellite branch in Tekka, launching a Member Impact Dashboard, introducing a Legacy-to-Future Mentorship Programme and establishing an India-ASEAN Trade Desk to help businesses leverage regional opportunities.
The team has also emphasised governance, transparency and financial prudence while seeking to attract the next generation of entrepreneurs into the chamber.
Among the newly elected directors is Mr S. Mahenthiran, chief executive officer of Catering Solutions and honorary secretary of the Indian Restaurants’ Association. He has advocated expanding mentorship opportunities and strengthening SICCI’s role in helping businesses access overseas markets, funding opportunities and industry networks.
The new board will also face the challenge of helping members adapt to rapid technological change, including artificial intelligence adoption and digital transformation.
Despite the decisive outcome, the election concluded with calls for unity from both camps.
Losing vice-chairman candidate Biren S. Desai of the FLA congratulated Team Raj and accepted the result graciously.
“The results are out. Members have spoken – decisively, in favour of Team RAJ,” he wrote on LinkedIn.
He wished the incoming leadership success and praised the chamber’s election process, thanking outgoing chairman Neil Parekh for his stewardship during what many described as a challenging and highly contested campaign.
Business leaders also welcomed the outcome.
Mr JK Saravana, chairman of Tantra Inc Group of Companies, said Team Raj “didn’t come to learn the role” but arrived prepared to lead.
Former SICCI chairman M. Rajaram described the result as a clear endorsement of experience, principle and proven leadership, expressing confidence that SICCI would continue strengthening its standing under Mr Rajakumar’s chairmanship.
With the election now concluded, attention will shift from campaigning to execution.
For Team Raj, the challenge will be translating a strong electoral mandate into tangible outcomes for members. For SICCI, the election may ultimately be remembered not only for its decisive result, but also for demonstrating the chamber’s ability to embrace democratic participation while remaining united around its mission of advancing the interests of Singapore’s Indian business community.
