More than 350 yoga enthusiasts gathered at the West Lawn of Gardens by the Bay on Sunday to celebrate the 12th International Day of Yoga (IDY), organised by the High Commission of India in Singapore in partnership with Gardens by the Bay.
The event was attended by Guest of Honour Minister of State for the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth and the Ministry of Transport, and Mayor of the North East District, Mr Baey Yam Keng.
In his welcome address, the High Commissioner of India, Mr Shilpak Ambule, highlighted the significance of this year’s global theme, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” noting that it reflects the enduring value of maintaining balance between physical, mental, and social well-being.
“It is inspiring to see yoga becoming an integral part of everyday life - flourishing in schools, parks, community spaces, and wellness centres across the island,” he said.
He described yoga as a pathway towards “vitality, resilience, and a balanced way of life” and commended Singapore’s enthusiastic embrace of the practice across schools, parks, community spaces, and wellness centres.
Delivering the keynote address, Mr. Baey emphasised yoga’s evolution from an ancient spiritual tradition into a worldwide movement. “Yoga is more than just healthy exercise,” he said, noting that the practice is now accessible to people of all ages, fitness levels, and backgrounds.
Mr. Baey also highlighted the role of yoga in strengthening bilateral ties, describing it as one of the many cultural connections that bring the peoples of Singapore and India together. “Yoga is one of the many cultural threads that draw our people together,” he remarked.
The celebration featured a mass yoga session led by experienced instructors from Vyasa Yoga, who guided participants through a series of asanas and pranayama exercises. The session provided an invigorating experience for both seasoned practitioners and newcomers alike.
Observed annually on June 21, the International Day of Yoga was recognised by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2014 following a proposal by the Prime Minister of India.
Since its inaugural observance in 2015, the day has been celebrated globally, promoting yoga’s benefits for physical health, mental wellness, and holistic living.
A special mention was also made of Singapore’s success at the 1st World Yogasana Sports Championship held in Ahmedabad, India, from June 4 to 8. The Singapore team won seven medals at the international competition..
