A new cohort of 76 Justices of the Peace (JPs) were appointed by President Tharman Shanmugaratnam in a ceremony on Sept 18 at the National Gallery Singapore.
Among them, 20 are new appointments, while 56 were re-appointed for another term.
New appointees include business owner and community leader Jayakumar Narayanan, educator Kalyani Sinnakkalai Ramasamy, Ministry of Education cluster superintendent Rathi Parimalan and investment firm director Dr Joshua VM Kuma.
The JPs will serve a five-year term starting from Sept 1.
Justices of the Peace are outstanding Singaporeans recognised for their significant contributions to their professions, the public service, social services, and the wider community.
Appointed under the State Courts Act, JPs perform duties such as Visiting Justices at prisons, volunteer mediators in the State Courts, and solemners of marriages.
With over 35 years of community service under his belt, Mr Jayakumar, 69, expressed his readiness to continue meeting the needs of the public.
Having been actively involved in grassroots activities at Nee Soon GRC since 1989, and also at Sembawang GRC, he previously served as the president of the Singapore Malayalee Association and Singapore Malayalee Hindu Samajam.
“I’m honoured. Being appointed a Justice of Peace comes with great responsibility, and I will do my best to fulfill my duties professionally and with humility,” Mr Jayakumar said.
The oath-taking and affirmation ceremony was presided over by the Judge of the High Court, Justice Christopher Tan.
