A total of 1,417 students who demonstrated notable academic progress and excelled in their GCE N(A), N(T), and O-Level examinations were recognised at the Joint Tuition Awards (JTA) ceremony held on 29 August at Republic Polytechnic’s Cultural Centre.
Organised jointly by Singapore’s four self-help groups - the Chinese Development Assistance Council (CDAC), The Eurasian Association (EA), the Singapore Indian Development Association (SINDA), and Yayasan MENDAKI - the annual awards were established in 2004 and celebrates the educational milestones of students enrolled in the Collaborative Tuition Programme (CTP).
Senior Minister of State for Education Dr Janil Puthucheary graced the event as the Guest of Honour. Dr Janil highlighted the growth of the initiative, which began with just 11 locations and now operates 232 centres islandwide, benefiting nearly 20,000 students.
“The Indian population accounts for roughly 9% of Singapore. This year, 403 Indian students are receiving awards, representing 28% of this year’s awardees,” SINDA Chief Executive Officer Anbarasu Rajendran shared.
Mr Anbarasu also added that SINDA individually operates 25 physical centres and two online centres. However, through this joint effort, 232 centres are available, creating numerous opportunities and convenience for students.
Beyond academic achievements, the ceremony celebrated stories of resilience. Among the awardees who received the ‘Best Overall Award’ was Melvin Elliot.
He attended tuition classes at the Yishun Secondary School STEP centre. Despite facing difficult times when his father fell ill, Melvin managed family duties while excelling in his studies.
Currently pursuing his studies at Millennia Institute, Melvin achieved grade improvements across three subjects in his GCE O-Level examinations.
“At the beginning of Secondary 4, my grades were very low. Following my parents’ recommendation, I joined the tuition class at SINDA’s STEP centre. Looking back today, I am amazed at how much I have improved because of these Tuition classes,” said Melvin.
This year’s ceremony was held across two sessions and was attended by teachers, family members, and friends.
