Hindu devotees must register online if they want to take part in five key rituals at the fire-walking festival at the Sri Mariamman Temple on Oct 12.

Registration opens on Sept 4.

There will be no walk-in sale of tickets at the temple for any of the fire walking-related rituals, said the Hindu Endowments Board (HEB) in a statement on July 24.

The five rituals are walking on the fire pit, walking around the fire pit, paalkudam, angaprathachanam and kumbiduthandam. They are performed by devotees to fulfil vows they had made.

Individuals taking part in the paalkudam ceremony carry milk pots as an act of devotion.

For the angaprathachanam, devotees lie on the ground with their arms outstretched in prayer and roll around the premises of the temple.

And for the kumbiduthandam, devotees walk around the temple premises, prostrating in prayer every three steps of the way.

For male participants walking on the fire pit, there will also be a foot procession from Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple to Sri Mariamman Temple on Oct 12.

The annual Theemithi (fire-walking) Festival has been a significant religious event for Hindus in Singapore for over 150 years. It runs for three months, with several pre-events and ceremonies that culminate in a day of fire-walking.
