The High Commission of India (HCI) hosted the second edition of its Indian New Year (Harvest Month) Celebrations on Jan 11, bringing together nearly 1,500 Indian migrant workers for a heartwarming and vibrant Pongal festival at the Sembawang Recreation Centre.

The event, organised by Mett.AI with support from HCI, was attended by High Commissioner Shilpak Ambule and Mr Tung Yui Fai, chief of the Assurance, Care and Engagement (ACE) Group at the Ministry of Manpower.

The celebration paid tribute to the vital role of Indian migrant workers in Singapore’s development while offering them a festive evening filled with cultural richness, community spirit, and gratitude.

Over 50 local artistes shared the stage with migrant workers in a series of electrifying performances, including traditional dances, live music, and a fashion showcase spotlighting India’s rich textile and festive heritage.

The programme also featured yoga and meditation sessions, harvest-themed activities, and a Pongal ceremony that brought the spirit of a Tamil village celebration to northern Singapore.

“This celebration reflects our commitment to supporting our migrant brothers and sisters in Singapore and honouring their contributions,” said Dr Ambule. He also used the occasion to highlight consular outreach efforts such as passport renewal camps, encouraging greater participation in upcoming initiatives.

Over 110 volunteers – many of them Indian professionals working in Singapore – helped organise the event, which included complimentary meals, sugarcane juice, goodie bags, and more. The initiative created a strong sense of belonging, breaking social barriers through culture and shared experience.

Community organisations such as Singapore Indian Fine Arts Society, Art and Artist School of Fine Arts, Arya Yoga, Dorm Moms, and the Singapore Malayalee Association joined the celebrations, demonstrating solidarity with the workers and the broader Indian diaspora.
