Known as Theemithi Thiruvizha in Tamil, devotees go across a bed of burning embers and hot coals as an act of faith, devotion and thanksgiving to the goddesses Sri Mariamman and Sri Draupathi Amman. The Sri Mariamman Temple, Singapore’s oldest Hindu temple, has been the focal point of the fire-walking festival here since the mid-19th century.

The Guest of Honour was Dr. Tan See Leng, Minister for Energy, Trade and Industry (Energy and Industry).

Theemithi is the culmination of a festival which began with kodiyetram, or festival flag hoisting, on Aug 17. THE STRAITS TIMES
