Heavy monsoon rains triggered flooding across Delhi and northern India on Sept 4, with the Yamuna river breaching the danger mark and muddy waters inundating low-lying areas near the Red Fort.

Thousands were evacuated, while authorities shut the historic Loha Pul bridge as a precaution.

People waded through floodwaters in areas surrounding the historic Red Fort, many carrying an idol of Lord Ganesha, the Hindu god who vanquishes obstacles, for immersion in the river waters in an annual ritual.

In Jammu and Kashmir, the Jhelum overflowed, flooding the capital Srinagar, while a landslide struck the Ratle hydropower project.

Officials said August rains have killed at least 130 people, though showers are forecast to ease in the coming days.
