A decision by the Congress-led Telangana government to rename a prominent road in Hyderabad as Donald Trump Avenue has sparked political controversy, drawing sharp criticism from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The road, located beside the United States Consulate and near offices of major American technology firms including Microsoft, Google, and Amazon, was renamed as a gesture highlighting Hyderabad’s growing role in the India-US partnership.
The BJP, however, accused Congress of hypocrisy, noting that the party has repeatedly criticised US President Donald Trump over tariffs and other issues affecting India.
BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla questioned why a Congress government would honour Mr Trump despite senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi accusing the US president of harming Indian interests.
Congress leaders defended the move, saying it reflects Hyderabad’s expanding strategic and economic ties with the US.
