India secured a historic victory in the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, defeating the New Zealand national cricket team at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Led by captain Suryakumar Yadav, India delivered a remarkable all-round performance to win the title and successfully defend their world championship.
With this win, the team became the first to win the T20 World Cup three times and also the first to retain the title in consecutive editions.
Batting first, India produced a stunning display with the bat, posting 255 for 5 in 20 overs, the highest total in a T20 World Cup final.
Sanju Samson led the charge with an outstanding 89 runs from 46 balls, smashing eight sixes and five boundaries. He was supported by Abhishek Sharma (52) and Ishan Kishan (54), while Shivam Dube added a quick 26 not out from merely eight balls, pushing India past the 250 mark.
Chasing the daunting target of 256, New Zealand struggled to keep up with the required run rate.
Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah delivered a match-winning spell, finishing with 4 wickets for 15 runs in four overs. His performance also included two wickets in two consecutive balls.
Despite a fighting 52 from Tim Seifert, New Zealand were bowled out for 159 runs in 19 overs, giving India a comprehensive 96-run victory in the final.
For his outstanding bowling performance, Bumrah was awarded the Man of the Match. “I tried to read the situation and trust myself,” he said when asked about his calmness and precision during such high pressure situations.
Although Bumrah starred in the final, Sanju Samson was named Player of the Tournament for his exceptional batting throughout the competition. Samson scored 321 runs during the tournament, playing several match-winning innings for India.
“Feels like a dream, this is exactly what I wanted to achieve,” he said, adding that he had been in constant touch with Sachin Tendulkar, who guided him during the tournament.
The triumph was particularly special for captain Suryakumar Yadav, as it marked his first T20 World Cup title as India’s T20 captain. Yadav led the team confidently throughout the tournament and guided India to another historic world title. “It will take a while for the feeling to sink in.
Retired from T20 cricket, Virat Kohli took to his Instagram to congratulate the team. “Champions once again. Great character shown by the boys under pressure throughout the tournament and absolutely no one could come close to this talented bunch of players,” he said.
