Singapore and India are exploring a proposed 3,000-km land-based power transmission corridor to connect their electricity grids, Indian media reported citing India’s Minister of State for Power, Shripad Yesso Naik.
The corridor - designed to transmit 2,000 MW of cross-border electricity between the two countries - will link Imphal in the northeastern state of Manipur with Singapore through Myanmar, Thailand and Malaysia, Mr Shripad said at the East Asia Summit Energy Ministers’ Meeting in Manila on Oct 8.
As the plan is in its infancy, construction timelines and formal bilateral agreements are yet to be finalised.
India is expanding its regional electricity links as part of efforts to improve energy cooperation with neighbouring countries. It already has power connections with Bangladesh, Nepal, Myanmar and Bhutan, and exports electricity to these markets.
Discussions are also under way for an interconnection with Sri Lanka, while possible grid links with Saudi Arabia and the UAE are being explored.
