Singapore’s High Commissioner to India, Simon Wong, congratulated the re-elected Chief Minister (CM) of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, on May 12 in a post on X.

The post reads: “Big congratulations to our friend #himantabiswa. Your new term as Chief Minister will no doubt propel Assam to greater heights. As your trusted friend, we will stand by Assam as always.”

Mr Himanta, who is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, will be serving his second term as CM after the party’s win in the recent Assembly Elections.

Singapore has been taking an interest in the North-East Indian state, with the signing of a memorandum of understanding last year between Singapore and Assam, under Mr Himanta, aimed at improving training for nurses in the state so they may migrate to the island-nation.

In January, Mr Himanta also met with President Tharman Shanmugaratnam at the World Economic Forum, Assam’s first CM to be invited to the forum. He had also met Mr Tharman the previous year to discuss similar development opportunities.

Mr Wong also attended the swearing-in ceremony of Tamil Nadu’s new Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, in Chennai.
