Italian luxury house Prada will release a limited-edition line of Kolhapuri-inspired sandals in February 2026, following criticism over cultural appropriation.
The US$939 (S$1,215) sandals, under the new “Prada Made in India – Inspired by Kolhapuri Chappals” label, will be produced in collaboration with government-backed entities in Maharashtra and Karnataka. Only 2,000 pairs will be made initially.
The move comes after a June controversy when Prada showcased braided leather sandals resembling traditional Kolhapuris without crediting their Indian origins.
In response, the brand acknowledged the design’s heritage and has since worked with Indian authorities to involve local artisans in the production process.
As part of the agreement signed during the 2025 Italy-India Business Forum, about 200 Kolhapuri artisans will receive specialised training – some in India and others in Italy – to meet Prada’s standards.
