India’s first “musical road”, which plays the iconic Bollywood number Jai Ho when vehicles drive over specially designed grooves, was inaugurated on Mumbai’s Coastal Road on Feb 11.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis launched the 500-metre pilot stretch, developed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, on the northbound carriageway from Nariman Point towards Worli.

Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said the project could be replicated on the Samruddhi Expressway.

The road uses rumble strips based on Hungarian technology. When vehicles pass over the grooves at 70km/h to 80km/h, vibrations recreate the melody of Jai Ho from Slumdog Millionaire, composed by A.R. Rahman with lyrics by Gulzar.

Civic officials said this is India’s first musical road and the fifth such installation worldwide.
