India’s film industry is witnessing a technological shift as artificial intelligence enters mainstream filmmaking, with Maharaja in Denims emerging as a key contender in the race to produce the country’s first AI-generated blockbuster.
Based on Mr Khushwant Singh’s 2014 novel, the film is slated for release this summer. Mr Singh, who co-founded Intelliflicks Studios, says AI eliminates traditional filmmaking constraints such as actor fees, schedules and physical sets, allowing creators to rely purely on “the mind and the machine”.
While Indian studios rapidly adopt AI, unlike cautious Hollywood counterparts, challenges remain. Rapid advancements in AI tools have delayed production timelines and increased costs.
Other AI-driven projects, including Chiranjeevi Hanuman: The Eternal and Love You, signal a growing trend, though technical hurdles continue to test filmmakers in this evolving space.
