Delhi PG operator arrested after collapse kills seven
Police have arrested Sudhanshu, one of two operators of a five-storey paying guest accommodation that collapsed in Delhi’s Satya Niketan, killing seven people.
Labour contractor Sanoj, who allegedly supervised basement repair work linked to the collapse, was earlier detained. AFP reported that rescuers pulled 12 people from the rubble.
The building owner has also been arrested, while several municipal officials were suspended.
11 dead after suspected illicit liquor consumption
At least 11 people died, and around 35 were hospitalised after allegedly consuming illicit liquor in Madhya Pradesh’s Sagar district on Sept 5, IANS reported.
Cases emerged from at least four villages after residents reportedly consumed the liquor that night.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav ordered a thorough investigation and promised the “strictest possible action”, saying his government would not tolerate such incidents.
Manipuri musician beaten to death in Delhi
Seven people have been arrested and a juvenile detained over the death of Manipuri musician Chongtham Vikram Singh in southeast Delhi, according to local media reports.
Police said the 54-year-old was allegedly attacked outside his Kilokari village apartment after confronting a group drinking alcohol and creating a nuisance.
Those accused reportedly included delivery workers and employees of local eateries.
BAPS apologises over Eiffel Tower controversy
Hindu organisation BAPS has apologised following controversy over a visit by about 100 male members to the Eiffel Tower, which subsequently prompted staff to strike.
The tower operator said the group had requested limited interaction with women and acknowledged that accepting the condition was a mistake.
BAPS maintained that nobody was denied access but apologised to anyone hurt or inconvenienced by the episode.
Vijay faces criticism over ‘jaw gesture’
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has drawn criticism from the DMK-led Opposition and ally CPM over a gesture interpreted as mocking former chief minister M.K. Stalin, according to media reports.
During an Assembly response referring to Emergency-era MISA arrests, Vijay gestured around his jaw. Mr Stalin was arrested in 1976 and allegedly suffered a fractured jaw after being assaulted in custody.
Fake ‘PMO official’ arrested with armed bodyguard
Mumbai Police arrested businessman Rohan Parekh and his armed bodyguard after Parekh allegedly tried to enter Jio World Plaza using a forged identity card and claiming to be a Prime Minister’s Office official.
Police said his ex-serviceman bodyguard carried a licensed firearm.
The incident occurred a day before Prime Minister Narendra Modi was scheduled to attend the Global Fintech Fest at the adjoining NMACC.
Alternative-fuel car sales overtake petrol models
Alternative-fuel passenger vehicles outsold petrol cars in India for the first time in August, Reuters reported, citing auto dealers’ body FADA.
Sales of CNG, hybrid and electric vehicles benefited from lower running costs and concerns surrounding India’s transition to E20 petrol.
Some motorists, particularly owners of older vehicles, fear the higher ethanol blend could reduce fuel economy and affect engine performance.
Air India flight issued a two-second stall warning
An Air India A320 flying from Phuket to New Delhi issued a two-second stall warning after losing pressure in all three hydraulic systems, Reuters reported, citing Indian investigators.
The aircraft suddenly climbed and descended while cruising at 36,000ft, throwing passengers and crew against overhead bins and injuring 24.
The AAIB preliminary report did not establish what caused the hydraulic pressure loss.
eBay probes sale of banned gender-test kits
eBay is reviewing its safeguards after Reuters found gender-prediction kits listed for delivery to India, where prenatal sex determination is prohibited.
Reuters identified nine listings from third-party sellers, which eBay removed after being alerted. The company acknowledged the products violated local regulations and its policies.
India introduced strict prenatal gender-determination legislation following concerns over sex-selective abortions and a declining female birth ratio.
Food warning-label proposal challenged in court
Health activists have challenged the government’s proposed front-of-pack food warning labels in the Supreme Court, arguing they could allow unhealthy products to escape warnings, Reuters reported.
The government proposes red labels when foods exceed limits in at least two of three categories — added sugar, salt or saturated fat.
Campaigners argue products dangerously high in just one category could therefore remain unflagged.
Meta India chief summoned over abuse-related ads
India’s child-rights watchdog has summoned Meta India’s managing director and country head over advertisements allegedly linked to child sexual exploitation and abuse material.
The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights acted after taking suo motu cognisance of a BBC Eye investigation. Meta responded to an earlier notice in July.
The commission subsequently launched a formal inquiry and summoned company representatives for further information.
Five orangutans discovered in Odisha forest
Five orangutans have been rescued from a forest in Odisha’s Balasore district, raising suspicions of international wildlife smuggling, according to media reports.
Forest Minister Ganesh Ram Singhkhuntia said the great apes are not native to India and are primarily found in Southeast Asian rainforests.
Odisha has asked the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau to investigate how the critically endangered animals reached the Bichitrapur forest area.
Lucknow beats Indore in clean-air rankings
Lucknow has edged out Indore by one point to take the top position in India’s 2026 Clean Air Survey, PTI reported.
Indore Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava attributed his city’s second-place finish to its performance on PM10 pollution standards.
The rankings, announced at the Swachh Vayu Sarvekshan Awards, assess measures addressing road dust, vehicle emissions, industrial pollution and other sources of urban air pollution.
