Acclaimed Indian singer Arijit Singh took to social media to declare his retirement from playback singing, sending shockwaves through his fan base. The announcement came as a rude shock to scores of listeners who have turned to Arijit’s voice for almost every occasion.
Singh thanked his listeners for their decades of support, writing, “Hello, Happy New Year to all. I want to thank you all for giving me so much love all these years as listeners. I am happy to announce that I am not gonna be taking any new assignments as a playback vocalist from now on. I am calling it off. It was a wonderful journey.”
The 38-year-old was first scouted during his stint on the Indian reality show Fame Gurukul in 2005 and kicked off his illustrious playback journey with Phir Mohabbat from Murder 2. This was soon followed by hits such as Raabta from Agent Vinod, and, of course, Tum Hi Ho from Aashiqui 2, a song that spread like wildfire among Bollywood music lovers.
Since then, Arijit has left an indelible mark on the industry, emerging as one of the most versatile and celebrated voices in Indian music. Over the years, he delivered iconic numbers like Channa Mereya, Agar Tum Saath Ho, Kesariya, Gerua, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, and many more.
He has also received multiple accolades for his work, including two National Film Awards for Best Male Playback Singer and the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian honours, in 2025.
Arijit’s departure from playback singing does not necessarily mean fans will be deprived of new music from the singer. Taking to his private X account, Arijit shared that he intends to explore independent music, stating, “I am a fan of good music and in the future, will be learning more and do more on my own as a small little artist.”
Fellow artist Yashraj commented on Arijit’s post, saying, “Non-film Arijit Singh is going to be an absolute delight to witness. The compositions and craftsmanship will be a legendary new chapter.”
