Young flautists, including several students, rehearsed along Mumbai’s Marine Drive on Dec 29 under the guidance of acclaimed bansuri exponent Vivek Sonar, as preparations gathered pace for the 17th edition of the Annual Bansuri Utsav in Thane, Maharashtra.
Scheduled for Jan 3 and 4, the festival is the world’s only Indian classical music event dedicated exclusively to the bansuri.
Founded in 2007 by Sonar, a senior disciple of world-renowned classical flautist and music director Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, the Utsav is organised by Gurukul Pratishthan, a non-profit trust promoting classical music.
The opening day will feature Krishna Priya, a Kathak and bansuri presentation, followed by a recital by Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia.
Jan 4 will culminate in the festival’s signature 100-flautist symphony, bringing together musicians across generations.
The evening will also see the Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia Lifetime Achievement Award conferred on renowned lyricist Javed Akhtar.
