Thousands of devotees gathered at Gangasagar on Jan 14 to take a holy dip at the sacred confluence of the River Ganga and the Bay of Bengal, marking the auspicious occasion of Makar Sankranti.

Chanting hymns and prayers, pilgrims offered obeisance to the Sun God during the annual Gangasagar Mela, held near Kapil Muni’s ashram on Sagar Island in West Bengal.

Considered the second-largest Hindu religious fair after the Kumbh Mela, the Gangasagar Mela draws devotees from across India and abroad, many believing that a ritual bath here washes away sins and leads to moksha.

The mela site resonated with devotional chants, reflecting deep faith and spiritual fervour.
