A political rally by Tamil actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay turned tragic in Tamil Nadu’s Karur on Sept 28, leaving 41 people dead, including women and children.
According to the police report, a crowd of over 25,000 gathered by 11am for the noon event, though Vijay arrived only at 7pm – after unscheduled stops that formed an unapproved roadshow.
Police said TVK leaders ignored warnings about inadequate food, water, and crowd control. The chaos intensified when supporters broke barriers and climbed a tin shed roof, which collapsed. Authorities had prepared for only 10,000 attendees.
The incident has sparked a political row. TVK alleged a “conspiracy” by the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and sought a Central Bureau of Investigation probe. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin appealed for peace, saying the law will take its course.
