Members of the Uttarakhand Association of Singapore recently celebrated the rich heritage and culture of their land at an event called Kauthig.

More than 500 Uttarakhandis living in Singapore took part in the five-hour cultural extravaganza at the PGP Hall, with artistic performances and profound messages.

Kauthig refers to fairs held in the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand, known for its Hindu pilgrimage sites, where different communities come together to celebrate with music, dance, performances and food.

It is also an opportunity for youth to assimilate the values of Uttarkhand in a joyous environment.

Popular singers from Uttarkhand Amit Khare, Inder Arya and Meena Rana regaled the audience with Garhwali and Kumaoni songs. Actress and model Shweta Mahara did a few dance numbers.

The event was followed by dinner.

“Celebrations are an important part of our lives, which help us connect to our heritage, sense of identity and foster a sense of belonging within the community,” said Mr Harish Chandra Pant, president of the association, which was formed in 2013.

“In the nineties, the community constituted of a small group of families who had migrated to Singapore following work opportunities. Now we have more than 50 families who support each other.

“The association has been involved in celebrations, charities, wellness workshops, entrepreneurship programmes, as well as promoting the Uttarakhand culture within and beyond Singapore.”
