MBS casino revenue hits record as Q2 earnings surpass pre-Covid levels

Integrated resort Marina Bay Sands (MBS) reached another record level of mass gaming revenue in2023 Q2, as adjusted property earnings surpassed pre-Covid-19 levels, parent company Las Vegas Sands said on Wednesday.

MBS posted adjusted property earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (Ebitda) of US$432 million ($572.5 million) for the three months ended June 30. This is 24 per cent higher than the US$346 million reported in 2019 Q2.

Year on year, adjusted property Ebitda was up 35.4 per cent from US$319 million.

Further efforts to ease hospital crunch

Nursing manpower will get a major boost – such as attracting new nurses with a $15,000 sign-on bonus – and hundreds more hospital and rehabilitative care beds will be added by the end of 2023 to alleviate the capacity crunch at public hospitals. These measures are to help the sector cope with crowded wards and long waiting times.

Health Minister Ong Ye Kung announced these efforts at the Nurses’ Merit Award ceremony at Orchard Hotel on Wednesday, where he conferred the award on 125 nurses. 

Fingerprints of man who died at home do not match national database records 

When a man named Abdul Rahman Majid died at home from coronary artery disease in August 2022, the police took his fingerprints to confirm his identity. But they did not match the prints of anyone listed in Singapore’s national database.

At the coroner’s inquiry into the man’s death on Tuesday, investigation officer Ng Yun Ning told State Coroner Adam Nakhoda that the man’s sons were shocked when told their father’s name was not Abdul Rahman Majid.

State Coroner Nakhoda said he understood the family wants to know their father’s real name. But he said this may not come to light, as previous investigations have yet to yield any clues to his identity. Findings will be given at a later date.

Former GIC investment chief announces presidential bid

The 75-year-old former GIC chief investment officer Ng Kok Song confirmed his bid for the presidency when he turned up at the Elections Department (ELD) on Wednesday at around 10.30am, accompanied by his fiancee.

After collecting his forms, Mr Ng told reporters outside ELD that he wanted to give Singaporeans a choice because he has been involved in building up the country’s reserves and because he is independent.

Speaker of Parliament Tan Chuan-Jin, Tampines MP Cheng Li Hui resign over affair

In the latest incident to rock the ruling People’s Action Party, Speaker of Parliament Tan Chuan-Jin and Tampines GRC MP Cheng Li Hui have resigned over their extramarital affair.

Making the announcement in a statement on Monday, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said their resignations were necessary to maintain the high standards of propriety and personal conduct that the PAP has upheld all these years.

WP’s Leon Perera, Nicole Seah resign over extramarital affair

Workers’ Party (WP) MP Leon Perera and senior leader Nicole Seah have resigned from the party after initially lying about an extramarital affair, in the latest incident to rock the country’s political scene.

Making the announcement at a media conference on Wednesday, WP chief Pritam Singh said that sometime around late 2020 and early 2021, he was informed by Mr Perera’s driver through WhatsApp that Mr Perera and Ms Seah were meeting very often at restaurants and hotels, and he had seen them hugging each other and holding hands.

Both Mr Perera and Ms Seah are married.
