Divya Deshmukh received a rousing welcome at Nagpur airport on July 30 after winning the 2025 Women’s Chess World Cup in Batumi, Georgia.
She became the first Indian woman to win the prestigious title.
The 19-year-old Indian chess player defeated compatriot Koneru Humpy in tiebreaks to clinch the title, earning the prestigious Grandmaster title, a Candidates berth, and a US$50,000 prize.
Greeted by relatives and fans, Divya expressed gratitude to her family and late coach Rahul Joshi. “This is just the start,” she said.
