Argentina survived a major World Cup scare to book their place in the quarter-finals with a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over Egypt on July 7. But, the defending champions’ triumph has been overshadowed by intense debate over a series of contentious refereeing and VAR decisions that left the Egyptian camp feeling aggrieved.
According to reports by Sky Sports, Al Jazeera and Marca, Egypt’s spirited performance against the reigning champions ended amid widespread controversy, with players, coaches and pundits questioning several key officiating calls that many believe altered the course of the last-16 encounter.
Egypt appeared on the verge of producing one of the biggest shocks of the tournament after racing into a 2-0 lead, with Mohamed Salah leading a dangerous attack that repeatedly exposed Argentina’s defence. The African side looked poised to eliminate the world champions before Argentina staged a remarkable turnaround, scoring three goals in the closing stages to snatch victory.
However, the comeback quickly became secondary to the refereeing decisions that dominated post-match discussion.
One of the earliest flashpoints came shortly after halftime when Salah appeared to be breaking clear on goal. According to Eazysports, Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes challenged for the ball before the referee awarded a foul against Egypt, halting what the Egyptians believed was a promising attacking move. The incident immediately drew criticism from players and supporters.
The biggest controversy, however, centred on a disallowed Egyptian goal.
With Egypt leading, Mostafa Zico found the net and celebrated what appeared to be another decisive strike before the Video Assistant Referee intervened. Following a lengthy review, officials ruled that there had been a foul in the build-up and the goal was disallowed.
The decision sparked immediate protests from Egyptian players and ignited fierce debate online. While match commentators questioned whether the review fell within VAR’s intended scope, Al Jazeera noted that the International Football Association Board’s Laws of the Game do permit reviews for attacking offences committed during the build-up to a goal, including fouls, offsides and handballs.
The controversy did not end there.
Sky Sports reported that Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan accused the referee of being “unfair” after his side’s elimination. He also claimed Egypt had been denied a penalty shortly before Argentina launched the counter-attack that culminated in Enzo Fernandez’s late winning goal.
Hassan further alleged that another penalty appeal was not reviewed by VAR, while questioning why Egypt’s disallowed goal received greater scrutiny than other incidents during the match. FIFA had not publicly responded to those allegations at the time of the reports.
Egypt forward Zico echoed his coach’s frustration, saying both the team’s exit and the officiating decisions left the players devastated.
The debate extended beyond the two teams. Marca reported that former FIFA World Cup assistant video referee Fernando Guerrero criticised the application of the VAR protocol, arguing that the intervention leading to Egypt’s disallowed goal should not have occurred because Argentina had multiple opportunities to regain possession before the scoring move. Guerrero described the review as inconsistent with VAR guidelines governing the attacking possession phase. His assessment represents an expert opinion rather than an official FIFA position.
Despite the controversy, Argentina completed a remarkable comeback. Lionel Messi inspired the revival before Enzo Fernandez headed home the decisive goal in stoppage time to send the defending champions into the quarter-finals.
Yet, instead of celebrating a resilient escape, much of the football world has focused on the officiating.
Whether the refereeing decisions were correct under the Laws of the Game remains the subject of fierce debate. What is beyond dispute is that the dramatic contest will be remembered as much for its VAR controversies and the angry reactions they provoked as for Argentina’s remarkable fightback.
