India’s 1983 Cricket World Cup heroes will reunite in Singapore this August for a landmark three-day celebration of cricket, leadership and maritime camaraderie.

The Mariners Cricket Club (MCC) will host The ‘83 Legends Tour of Singapore from Aug 7 to 9, marking the first time members of India’s historic World Cup-winning squad are coming together for such a reunion in South-East Asia. The squad reunites regularly for major milestone anniversaries, special events and organised tours in India and the United Kingdom.

The event will feature some of Indian cricket’s most celebrated names, including 1983 World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev, batting legend Sunil Gavaskar and all-rounder Mohinder Amarnath, whose performances played a crucial role in India’s famous triumph at Lord’s.

Organised by the MCC, a Singapore-based cricket and professional networking club founded in 2005, the tour aims to bring together sports fans, corporate leaders and maritime executives while highlighting lessons in resilience, teamwork and leadership drawn from one of cricket’s greatest underdog victories.

The programme begins on Friday, Aug 7, with a Grand Gala Dinner expected to attract more than 600 guests from the sporting, corporate and maritime sectors. The evening will include an interactive talk session hosted by a celebrity sports anchor, giving attendees the opportunity to hear first-hand reflections from the players who transformed Indian cricket with their 1983 World Cup triumph.

The tour will also feature corporate leadership sessions on Aug 7 and 8. These 90-minute interactive workshops will use insights from elite sport to explore themes such as goal-setting, handling pressure, overcoming challenges and motivating teams.

The sporting highlight will be the Legends vs Mariners match on Saturday, Aug 8. The showpiece fixture will be held alongside the annual Mariners Premier League, which will feature 61 teams across corporate, open, women’s and junior divisions.

In a unique maritime-linked initiative, the match will be live-streamed to more than 2,000 commercial ships, allowing seafarers across the world to be part of the celebration.

Mr Avijit Dutta, president of MCC, said the 1983 World Cup victory remains a powerful example of collective belief and leadership.

“It was a definitive masterclass in overcoming impossible odds,” he said. “This landmark tour brings that historic legacy directly into Singapore’s vibrant corporate and sports ecosystem.”

He added that broadcasting the match to mariners at sea would reinforce Singapore’s global connectivity while celebrating the camaraderie of the maritime industry.

Guided by its motto, “Bringing the Maritime Industry Together Through Sport, Camaraderie & Community”, Mariners Cricket Club has built its identity around using cricket to foster professional relationships, teamwork and sportsmanship.

The ‘83 Legends Tour is expected to give Singapore’s cricket community a rare opportunity to celebrate one of the sport’s most iconic teams while strengthening the game’s visibility in South-East Asia.
