TV actor Swatantra Bharat says he was a depressed youth because of his name, which was given by his late father Shiva Nand, who was a scientific officer in Jammu.

“He was fond of the word ‘swatantra’ (free, independent) which signifies being unrestricted by rules,” he said.

“But only some people know its deep meaning. In school, my peers used to mock me, sometimes adding descriptions like Swatantra Bharat (Free India). I felt disheartened and urged my family to change my name.

“My grandfather helped me realise the beauty of the name, advising me to keep it. With that understanding, I embraced it proudly.

“Today, my name defines me and I take great pride in my choice to preserve it, considering it the most precious gift from my father.”
