The Tagore Society Singapore hosted a major cultural celebration marking the 165th birth anniversary of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore on May 17, bringing together around 300 guests and participants for an evening dedicated to art, literature and humanist philosophy.

Held at Singapore Indian Association’s Vijaya Hall, the four-hour programme was themed “Culture, Conscience and Community” and explored the relevance of Tagore’s ideals in multicultural Singapore today.

Organised jointly by the Tagore Society Singapore and the Singapore Indian Association, the event featured classical music, poetry recitations, dance performances, heritage reflections and community dialogues inspired by Tagore’s enduring legacy.

The celebration highlighted how Tagore’s humanist philosophy and cross-cultural ideals continue to resonate across generations and communities. Guests were treated to performances of Rabindra sangeet, literary readings and classical dance segments that blended tradition with contemporary relevance.

One of the memorable moments of the evening was a graceful performance by Ms Sarbani Bhattacharya inspired by Tagore’s iconic composition “Ekla Cholo Re”, which symbolises courage, resilience and inner strength. The performance drew warm appreciation from the audience.

Speakers and performers reflected on how Tagore’s ideas on humanity, coexistence and creativity remain significant in today’s digitally connected yet socially fragmented world.

Tagore, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913, remains one of South Asia’s most celebrated cultural icons. A poet, philosopher, composer and artist, he also penned the national anthems of both India and Bangladesh.

The Tagore Society Singapore regularly organises cultural events to preserve and promote his literary and artistic heritage through music, poetry and visual arts.
