Singapore will this weekend resonate with the lyrical beauty of Urdu poetry as Rehbar presents “Rumaaniyat – Celebrating the Romance of Poetry” on Nov 15 at the Stephen Riady Auditorium, NTUC Building.
Following its acclaimed debut in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, the event marks Rehbar’s first Singapore showcase – a celebration of storytelling, verse, and South Asian cultural heritage.
The evening opens with Rudaad-e-Ghazal (6pm-6.30pm), a poetic journey tracing the evolution of the Urdu ghazal through masters like Mir, Ghalib, Dagh, Firaq, and Faraz.
Interwoven with anecdotes and timeless couplets, it offers a rare immersion into centuries of poetic expression.
A traditional Mushaira (6.30pm-8pm) follows, bringing together celebrated poets who will recite their works in Urdu’s cherished oral style.
The session will feature ghazals, nazms, and couplets exploring themes of love, longing, and social reflection – engaging the audience in the intimate, interactive rhythm of classic mehfil gatherings.
“Rumaaniyat is an invitation to lose yourself in the music of words,” said poet Sujit Sahgal “Haasil”, founder of Rehbar, a non-profit promoting Urdu and Hindi poetry. “Our mission is to bridge generations and cultures – to take poetry beyond native speakers and into the hearts of new audiences.”
Founded to revive the art of Mushaira, Rehbar organises poetry workshops, ghazal-writing sessions, and appreciation talks that inspire both established poets and young enthusiasts.
