Singapore will come alive with nostalgia and cinematic magic on Aug 23 as Respect India presents A Musical Tribute to the Great Showman – Raj Kapoor.
Celebrating the legendary filmmaker’s centenary year, the event promises an evening of timeless songs, iconic moments, and heartfelt memories from one of Indian cinema’s most revered figures.
The tribute will take place at Global Indian International School, 27 Punggol Field Walk, starting at 6.30pm. Entry is free, but pre-registration or an invitation is mandatory for seating and security purposes.
Organised by Respect India, a nationally recognised non-profit dedicated to promoting India’s cultural heritage, the event will also feature several prominent guests.
Chief Guest for the evening will be Member of Parliament Manoj Tiwari, while the Guests of Honour include Prof Rajni Abbi, former mayor of Delhi, orthopaedic surgeon Yash Gulati and actor Mukesh Tyagi.
This special tribute is part of a year-long global celebration of Raj Kapoor’s 100th birth anniversary, with upcoming events planned in Russia, Mauritius, Uzbekistan and cities across India.
More than just a filmmaker, Raj Kapoor was India’s cinematic conscience, offering stories that reflected the moral dilemmas and emotional journeys of a newly independent nation.
From Aag and Barsaat to Awara, Bobby, and Mera Naam Joker, Kapoor’s films spoke to the masses – blending entertainment with empathy, and art with activism.
The Singapore event aims to bring together the Indian diaspora, students, music and cinema lovers, and cultural leaders for an intergenerational experience that honours Kapoor’s legacy.
According to Respect India, the goal is to inspire younger generations to discover Indian cinema’s humanistic power and reconnect with India’s artistic roots.
As the organisation noted: “Raj Kapoor was not just a filmmaker. He was India’s emotional autobiography – written on celluloid.”
