Bobby Deol as antagonist Abrar Haque in the Sandeep Reddy Vanga directorial Animal is trending big on social media – and for all the right reasons.

One particular scene, of Bobby’s entry in the film, has the Internet hooked.

It has Deol dancing to the viral song Jamal Kudu with a glass of alcohol on his head.

After T-Series released the full video of the two-minute song on Dec 7, it garnered more than 1.9 million views in just three hours.

Today, it is a huge hit among people in India, with millions dancing to the tunes at parties and copying and re-interpreting the moves in videos and posting them on social media.

The song has garnered more than 52 million views on YouTube as of Dec 21.

Originally composed by Iran’s Khatareh Group, Jamal Jamaloo Kudu was first sung by the choir of Kharazemi Girls’ High School in the 1950s. The song is an adaption of a poem written by Iranian poet Bijan Samandar.

Composer Harshavardhan Rameshwar reworked and remixed the song for Animal, giving it a new chorus.

The hook line “Jamal Jamalek Jamaloo Jamal Kudu” means “Oh my love, my beloved, my sweet love!”

“I experienced it in the theatre and believe me, no other scene from Animal created that much cheer and craziness,” wrote one person on YouTube.

Another said: “Bobby Deol deserves heartfelt appreciation for his ability to command attention and make every second count. With minimal screen time, he manages to leave an indelible mark through his nuanced expressions and compelling portrayal.”

The actor told Bollywood Spy how he got the idea of using a glass while dancing.

“It’s crazy, people are placing a glass on their dog’s head and dancing. Somebody wore the same suit as mine. It’s just overwhelming to see all of that.

“(Vanga) made me listen to the music. He found the song from somewhere and told me, ‘I will play this in your introduction’.

“When we started shooting, the choreographer said, ‘You do it’. I was like, ‘What will I do?’ I started dancing, and he told me, ‘No, No. Don’t do it like Bobby Deol’.

“Then I suddenly remembered the time when I was small, and we used to go to Punjab. I remembered how we used to get drunk and keep glasses on our heads. I never understood why we did it. It suddenly came to my mind and I did that. Sandeep liked it.”

The girl featured in the song, Iranian model and dancer Tannaz Davoodi, too has become an instant sensation.

Born in Tehran, the 26-year-old pursued a fashion design course, before becoming a Bollywood dancer. Her previous appearances in Hindi films were often in the background.
