Krishna Manjari – organised by Gita Jayanti Singapore, which is a part of the Hindu Endowments Board – is an annual celebration of the Bhagavad Gita through art and culture.
This year, the Sept 8 event features a bhajan concert by celebrated vocalist and playback singer Nithyasree Mahadevan (right).
The 49-year-old will be supported on vocals by her 17-year-old daughter Tanujashree Mahadevan and Singapore-based artistes Lazar TS (violin), Syamlal Sasidharan (mridangam) and Nawaz Mirajkar (tabla).
Hailing from a family of renowned South Indian classical musicians, Nithyashree has performed at all major carnatic music venues in India and released more than 500 albums. She is best known for her rendition of the A.R. Rahman composition Kannodu Kaanbadhellam – her playback debut song in the Tamil movie Jeans.
After her instant success as a playback singer in 1998, Nithyasree recorded more hits for Rahman, such as Minsara Kanna (1999 film Padayappa), Sowkiyama Kannae (Sangamam, 1999) and Manmatha Maasam (Parthale Paravasam, 2001).
Her other Tamil film songs include Kumbakonam Sandhayile (New, 2004), Oru Nadhi Oru Pournami (Samurai, 2002) and Thaai Thindra Mannae (Aayirathil Oruvan, 2010).
Nithyasree has also recorded songs in other South Indian languages, including Raa Raa in Kannada, Vaaraai in Telugu and Varavayi Thozhi in Malayalam.
