Director AR Murugadoss (right) has triggered debate after commenting on why Tamil cinema has yet to produce a Rs1,000-crore (S$147 million) global blockbuster like RRR or Baahubali.
While promoting his new film Madharasi, he suggested Tamil filmmakers often prioritise socially educating audiences over pure entertainment, which he believes impacts massive box office potential. His remarks drew mixed reactions online, with some praising the industry’s unique storytelling ethos, while others questioned the logic, saying meaningful cinema and commercial success aren’t mutually exclusive.
