WATCH: Pink

A courtroom drama directed by Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury, Pink explores themes of consent, justice, and gender inequality. Starring Amitabh Bachchan, Taapsee Pannu, Kirti Kulhari, and Andrea Tariang, the film, which was released in 2016, follows three young women who are falsely accused of assaulting a powerful politician. The film delves into the societal prejudices women face when asserting their rights, especially in the face of male authority.

Amitabh Bachchan’s portrayal of a lawyer who defends the women underscores the film’s central message: “No means no.” By addressing the issues of victim-blaming and the stigma surrounding women’s sexual autonomy, Pink became a significant conversation starter about the importance of respecting women’s choices and ensuring accountability.

WATCH: Mahanati

Nag Ashwin’s Telugu-language biographical drama, Mahanati, tells the life story of Savitri, a celebrated actress from South India who rose to fame in the 1950s and 1960s. Released in May 2018, the film stars Keerthy Suresh as Savitri, alongside Dulquer Salmaan, Vijay Deverakonda, and Samantha Akkineni in supporting roles. Mahanati chronicles Savitri’s meteoric rise in the male-dominated Telugu film industry, highlighting her triumphs as well as her personal struggles, including an abusive marriage and alcohol abuse.

The film portrays her not only as a talented and independent woman breaking barriers in cinema but also as someone who faced significant personal and professional challenges. Keerthy Suresh’s performance was widely praised, earning her the National Film Award for Best Actress. The film also sheds light on the toll the film industry took on Savitri’s life, reflecting the cost of fame and the often-overlooked sacrifices of women in entertainment.

WATCH: Uyare

Uyare is a Malayalam-language film released in April 2019, directed by Manu Ashokan, featuring Parvathy Thiruvothu in the lead role. The film follows the story of Pallavi (Parvathy), a young woman who dreams of becoming a pilot. Her life takes a tragic turn when she is brutally attacked with acid by her obsessive ex-boyfriend, leading to severe physical and emotional trauma. Despite the overwhelming odds, Pallavi refuses to let the attack define her and works tirelessly to regain her confidence and pursue her career in aviation.

Uyare highlights the physical and emotional toll of surviving an acid attack but also the strength required to rebuild one’s life in the face of societal rejection. Parvathy’s portrayal of Pallavi garnered widespread critical acclaim, with many praising her for delivering one of the most powerful performances in Malayalam cinema.
