WATCH: Idli Kadai

The feel-good Tamil film, Idli Kadai, which was theatrically released on Oct 1, is now available to stream on Netflix. It stars Dhanush, who also directed the film, in the lead role as Murugan, the son of an idli store owner who leaves his humble hometown to pursue culinary studies abroad and becomes a renowned chef at a luxury hotel in Bangkok.

However, a family tragedy forces Murugan to return home and take over the operations of his father’s idli store – to the displeasure of his future father-in-law, business tycoon Vishnu Vardhan (played by the versatile Sathyaraj), whose daughter he was set to marry. Therein lies the rest of the movie, which emotionally explores the themes of familial duty, reconnecting with one’s roots, and cultural preservation.

LISTEN: For A Reason

The top ten tracks on Spotify India’s Top 50 playlist have remained largely unchanged until recently, when Karan Aujla’s Punjabi pop hit, For A Reason, started making its way up the charts. The track currently sits at fifth place on the playlist and is expected to climb higher, having already attained over 80 million streams on Spotify.

The catchy beat makes up for the generic lyrics, which express two lovers’ mutual affection for each other. The music video, with 1.1 million likes on YouTube, is a bop with its throwback to oldschool Bollywood romances such as the exchange of discreet, flirtatious glances between the lead characters over an afternoon of kite flying. One commentor wrote: “Aujla doesn’t drop music videos, he drops mini movies.”
