READ: Penumbra

Likely inspired by Agatha Christie’s renowned detective character, Hercules Poirot, Penumbra (which refers to the outer region of a shadow that is partially illuminated during an eclipse) is a murder mystery novel released in May 2024. The plot follows the central character, an out-of-luck journalist named Prakash Ray, who receives an invitation to the 60th birthday celebration for an uncle he’s never heard of hitherto.

The celebration takes place in a quaint, suburban bungalow, and gathered with Prakash are a motley group of characters who all turn into suspects after one of them gets murdered in the middle of the stormy night. The book is rated 4.05/5 stars on GoodReads and is written by Bhaskar Chattopadhyay, an Indian-origin author currently based in Toronto, Canada.

WATCH: Kurukshetra

In an attempt to expand its slate of original content, Netflix India has commissioned an 18-episode animated series titled Kurukshetra: The Great War of Mahabharata. The show will be released in two installments of nine episodes each, with the first season set to premiere on Oct 10 worldwide. It can be streamed in Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada, and English, making it accessible for a pan-Indian audience.

The series offers a fresh take on the classic Indian epic, focusing on the 18-day climactic battle told through the perspectives of 18 key warriors as they grapple with moral dilemmas and personal conflicts in a fratricidal war. Celebrated Indian poet and lyricist Gulzar also penned the lyrics for the songs, adding a literary dimension to the animated production.
