WATCH: Homebound

Neeraj Ghaywan’s critically acclaimed Hindi film and India’s official entry for Best International Feature at the 98th Academy Awards, Homebound, is set to be released on Netflix worldwide on Nov 21. It stars Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa, and Janhvi Kapoor in pivotal roles.

The film is backed by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions, and legendary Hollywood director Martin Scorsese served as executive producer alongside Pravin Khairnar. Based on journalist Basharat Peer’s 2020 New York Times article “Taking Amrit Home”, the film tells the tale of two childhood friends, Shoaib (Ishaan) and Chandan (Vishal), who chase a police job that promises them a way out of poverty but are trapped by India’s brutal socio-political reality.

READ: The Zaminder’s Ghost

Published in 2023, The Zaminder’s Ghost by Khayaal Patel is a murder mystery novel set in the sleepy town of Ooty, Tamil Nadu, in 1933. The plot follows the protagonist, Arjun Rana, who returns home to his family manor after six years, having previously been presumed dead. His arrival throws the quaint town into disarray as he takes up the role of zamindar (landlord) after his father’s suicide.

It does not help that a spate of unexplained deaths occur within days of Arjun’s arrival and the circulation of rumours that the manor is being haunted by his father’s ghost, whom the townsfolk blame for the murders. With a 4 out of 5 stars rating on Goodreads, the novel is praised by readers for the way the characters, backdrop and circumstances are built up.
