In this month’s episode of tabla! talks, we speak with Jayasutha Samuthiran, Pratibha Sharma and Dalreena Poonam Gill about motherhood, womanhood and what Singapore’s latest family policies designed to lift the national fertility rate, truly mean for women.

The conversation examines the expectations placed on women to become mothers, and the extent to which a woman’s value is often tethered to her ability or willingness to take on that role.

Ms Pratibha incisively challenges this narrative, questioning the idea that motherhood should define a woman’s identity or measure her value. It is a view that is gaining ground as a society evolves, though it has yet to find the acceptance it deserves.

The discussion also widens to consider larger forces at play. While some women have concerns about the environment and question whether having more children is necessary or sustainable, mother of three Ms Jayasutha argues that having children is vital in preserving a sense of Singaporean identity.

Together, the women reflect on the practical realities that shape the decision to have children: financial pressure, work-life balance, stress on the body, and the importance of a supportive partner. For some, the willingness to become a parent hinges on whether responsibilities will be shared equally.

Ultimately, the conversation asks whether politics can influence such a deeply personal choice – and what women themselves want when it comes to motherhood.
