The Tagore Society Singapore marked the Indian New Year with a vibrant evening of music and cultural celebration at Baishakhi Harmony 2026, held on April 11 at the Sovereign Function Hall, Meyer Road.
Observed across South Asia through festivals such as Poila Boishakh, Baishakhi, Vishu, Puthandu, and Bohag Bihu, April signifies renewal, gratitude and fresh beginnings. The event reflected this spirit through a carefully curated musical showcase.
Featuring Kolkata-based artistes Abhishek Kumar Mitra and Sumona Nag, the evening blended classical roots with popular appeal.
A disciple of the legendary Indian playback singer, music director and actor Shyamal Mitra, Abhishek is known for his soulful renditions reminiscent of popular Bollywood singer Kishore Kumar, and he delivered crowd favourites such as “Bachna Ae Haseeno” with remarkable finesse.
Sumona complemented the performance with lively renditions of classics associated with the legendary Asha Bhosle, including “Piya Tu Ab To Aaja” and “Dum Maro Dum”.
The programme opened with Rabindra Sangeet, staying true to the Society’s core mission of promoting the legacy of Rabindranath Tagore. Notably, this was the Society’s first event with a strong Bollywood focus, drawing a diverse audience of around 120 attendees, including members of the Singapore Indian Association, Singapore Indian Fine Arts Society and the Singapore Pakistani Association.
The relaxed, festive atmosphere saw guests dancing, making song requests and enjoying an evening that bridged tradition with popular culture. The event also featured a communal dinner, adding to the sense of warmth and togetherness.
