More than 1,200 residents and partners gathered at the Queenstown National Day Celebration on Aug 31 to mark Singapore’s 60th birthday with a spectacular display of culture, unity, and creativity.
Organised by the Queenstown Citizens’ Consultative Committee (CCC) with support from the Central Singapore Community Development Council (CDC), the evening featured cultural performances, local delicacies, games, and a dazzling fireworks display. But the highlight of the celebration was a record-breaking floral tribute that captured the spirit of SG60.
Led by the Queenstown Indian Activity Executive Committee (IAEC), volunteers and residents spent hours creating a stunning 6m by 6m SG60 logo entirely from fresh flower petals. The ambitious effort, which used 104kg of tuberose and red roses flown in from Chennai, earned a place in the Singapore Book of Records as the largest SG60 floral logo.
Singapore Book of Records president Ong Eng Huat said: “Rose represents love and beauty. Doing the SG60 logo with roses shows the people’s love and appreciation for the nation.”
IAEC chairperson Ranjani Rangan said the idea was born out of a desire to do something meaningful for a milestone year.
“We wanted a tribute that symbolised how our diverse community, through unity and dedication, could come together to create something beautiful for Singapore.”
Vice-chairperson Manikandan Palanivel, who spearheaded the flower tribute, added that the project took three months of planning, and the strong support of grassroots leaders, including Member of Parliament representing Queenstown Single Member Constituency and Grassroots Adviser Eric Chua.
The flower installation began at 1pm and was completed by 6pm, drawing cheers from the crowd. Ms Kathiresan Dhivya, one of the participants, said: “We really enjoyed working as a team. Beyond the flowers, it was about friendship and memories. This spirit will stay with us forever.”
Another resident, Ms Akula Raja Shamili, praised the organisers: “The whole team did the task so well, and the outcome was beautiful.”
Mr Chua, who placed some of the flowers himself, called it a moving tribute.
“This year’s celebration is extra special as we commemorate SG60 – a milestone that reflects our nation’s resilience and unity. It is heartwarming to see residents, friends, and families come together to create such a joyful occasion.”
The evening ended with laughter, music, and fireworks – a true showcase of Queenstown’s community spirit as Singapore marked its diamond jubilee.
