In an era of global uncertainty, it is important for Singaporeans and organisations within Singapore to unite even more strongly behind our leaders and their decisions, said Senior Minister of State (SMS) for Law and Transport Murali Pillai.
Speaking at the Indian New Year celebrations organised by the Little India Shopowners’ & Heritage Association (LISHA) on April 19, Guest of Honour SMS Murali highlighted the necessity of national cohesion as the world faces increasing geopolitical and economic crises.
He pointed out the recent international developments, such as new regulations requiring all commercial vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz to submit documentation and pay fees.
“Such global shifts could have direct consequences for Singapore’s economy and maritime interests,” Mr Murali added.
To navigate these challenges, he stressed that the nation must remain steadfast and address issues through principled, policy-based solutions supported by a unified public.
The event, held at the PGP Hall of Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple, brought together 800 people from various Indian cultural backgrounds.
A collaboration among ten Indian cultural groups, including the Odia Society of Singapore and Marwari Mitra Mandal, produced 11 unique performances that showcased the diversity within the Indian community and entertained guests.
“The celebrations provided a platform for different subgroups to learn about each other’s specific heritage and traditions,” noted the organising chairperson of the event, Elysha Vani Perumal.
Another key highlight of the celebration was the launch of the ‘SINDA Bus’, a mobile outreach initiative in partnership with the Singapore Indian Development Association (SINDA).
The vehicle is designed to bring SINDA’s resources directly into neighbourhoods, such as reading programmes for students and health screenings for the elderly.
“The initiative aims to support disadvantaged families who may face space constraints or difficulty accessing centralised services. The bus will facilitate resources and programmes in a manner that ensures help reaches those most in need,” stated SINDA’s chief executive officer, Anbarasu Rajendran.
