Jurong Spring Community Club and Yuvabharathi International School (YBIS) celebrated a landmark cultural achievement on Nov 15 Nov with the unveiling of Singapore’s Largest Diya made entirely from paper quilling.
The record-setting artwork, recognised by the Singapore Book of Records, took centre stage at this year’s Deepavali Kondattam, held at the Jurong Spring CC Multi-Purpose Hall and Covered Activity Plaza.
The event, which ran from 6.30pm to 9.30pm, welcomed residents, families, and guests to an evening filled with celebration, community bonding, and artistic pride.
Attendees enjoyed an Indian non-vegetarian buffet, lively song and dance performances, a bouncy castle for children, and a lucky draw featuring prizes such as an iPad, SG60 limited-edition gold bars, and festive hampers.
The highlight of the evening was the unveiling of the massive diya — meticulously created using thousands of coils of coloured paper.
Though crafted entirely from paper, the artwork radiated the symbolic light and warmth of Deepavali. Organisers described it as a beacon of cultural pride, creativity, and teamwork.
“This Diya stands as a symbol of imagination, perseverance, and unity,” said organisers from Jurong Spring CC IAEC. “Every coil reflects the effort and passion of our community. It is even more meaningful as it connects with SG60 celebrations, bridging borders and strengthening cultural ties.”
The cultural programme opened with spirited dance performances by students from Yuvabharathi International School, who lit up the stage with their energetic rendition of “Aaja Nachle”, the title track and a signature dance from the 2007 Hindi film of the same name starring Madhuri Dixit.
This was followed by a soulful performance of “Kanna Nidhurinchara” from the film Bahubali, sung by Voruganti Radha Srinidhi and accompanied on guitar by Ananya Naveen.
Kavya later captivated the audience with her melodious version of “Kannukkul Pothivaippen”, a Tamil song from the 2014 movie Thirumanam Enum Nikkah.
Guest of Honour and MP Hamid Razak urged residents to continue fostering the kampung spirit.
“Let us each make one new friend today,” he said. “With over 65,000 residents in Jurong Spring and Gek Poh, staying connected is vital. A heartfelt thank you to all YBIS children for their wonderful performances year after year.”
YBIS Director Latha Mohankumar expressed pride in the collaborative achievement. “Our school has partnered with Jurong Spring IAEC for several years, and this year we are thrilled to have set a Singapore Book of Records milestone together,” she said. “Creating the Largest Diya made of Paper Quilling is a proud moment for all of us.”
